Police: Man Flees Checkpoint, Kills Woman In Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The State Highway Patrol has charged Eddie Ellison, 41, in connection with a fatal high speed chase.

Ellison is accused of speeding away from a checkpoint in the NoDa neighborhood Saturday night and crashing into a car.

Troopers charged Ellison with involuntary manslaughter, speeding to elude, assault on a government official and felony hit and run. Ellison is also charged with speeding. Police said he was driving 90 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Latia Antoinette Winchester, 25, was killed in the crash.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Ellison made a U-turn to avoid a checkpoint set up along 30th Street. Police then pursued him.

Investigators said the chase went on no longer than 30 seconds before Ellison ran a red light at the intersection of Parkwood Avenue and North Davidson Street and hit Winchester’s car.

The impact of the crash sent her car into the side of a home. Winchester died at the scene, police said.

Authorities said Ellison jumped from his car and ran from the scene but was quickly apprehended by troopers. He was taken to the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

Investigators said Ellison’s driver’s license had been revoked indefinitely and he was on probation.

According to police reports, Ellison’s criminal history dates back to 1985. Since then, Ellison has been charged with a slew of crimes including possession of marijuana and cocaine, burglary and resisting an officer.
