CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The driver of the other vehicle did not stop or report the incident, according to police.
Someone called 911 at about 3 a.m. Wednesday and said a man was lying on Carmel Road, near Timber Hill Court, in south Charlotte. When officers arrived, they said 22-year-old Jesse Hawkins was lying unconscious in the road, and his scooter was in a grassy area nearby.
Hawkins was pronounced dead at about 3:20 a.m.
Detectives said based on information gathered at the scene, they think Hawkins lost control of his scooter and crashed, and a short time later, a driver ran over him and continued driving. They think the crash happened between 2:10 a.m. and 3:11 a.m., which is when the 911 call was made.
Police said it's possible the driver didn't realize that he or she had hit a person.
That theory didn't sit well with some area residents.
"It's almost incomprehensible that anyone would do that," Sarah Armstrong, who lives in the area, said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. An information checkpoint was set up near the scene of the crash on Wednesday morning, but so far, police said they don't have any leads.
