Police Searching For Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A Charlotte mother is calling for justice after her son was hit and killed by a driver.

“This person needs to be caught for what he did to my little baby," Loretta Hawkins said, holding a picture of her son, 22-year-old Jesse.

He was killed early Wednesday after police said he crashed his scooter on Carmel Road in south Charlotte. As he was picking up pieces of his scooter that were knocked off in the crash, a driver hit him.

Police said the driver didn’t stop or report the incident.

“Had this person stopped and called 911, my son might still be here," Hawkins said.

Investigators still have no suspects, but told the Hawkins family they are searching nearby for abandoned cars and even checking with local bars to see who had left around the time of the crash.

There is a street light just steps in front of the scene of the accident, but it doesn’t work.

Officials at Duke Energy said the light will be working by Thursday night.

Hawkins' family is planning a candlelight vigil at the accident scene on Friday at 9 p.m.
