Report: Charlotte, Raleigh Hit Hardest By Gas Prices, Driving Habits

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

According to travel experts at AAA, the average price of gas has seen little change in the last week, but the average cost in Charlotte increased two cents over Wednesday.

In Charlotte, drivers are paying an average of $3.88 per gallon. The state-wide average is one cent less. And in South Carolina, the average is $3.75 per gallon.

A new study released this week says Charlotte drivers are one of the hardest groups being hit in the nation when comparing gas prices. The report’s findings were based on how Charlotte commuters drive, not how much they pay in gas.

The study was done for the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago and was published in Forbes Magazine.

According to that study, three North Carolina cities are among the worst in the nation when it comes to guzzling gas. The study used a normalized price of $4 per gallon of gas and looked at household averages.

According to the study, the average Raleigh-Durham household drives 21,800 miles per year, burning through more than 7,700 gallons of gas and spending more than $4,300 on fueling its cars.

Just behind Raleigh is Charlotte, the study reported. In Charlotte, commuters drive an average of 21,500 miles per year and use an average of 1,061 gallons of gas.

Greensboro was ranked sixth on the list.

According to the study, New York and Los Angeles ranked as the best cities.
