Residents, Workers Concerned About Wachovia Buyout's Effect On University Research Park

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The threat of layoffs at Wachovia will be one of the top priorities for Charlotte City Council members at next Monday night's workshop.

Councilors expect to hear several presentations on the state of Charlotte's economy, the reaction in the days after Citigroup announced plans to buy out large chunks of Wachovia, and the challenges the city faces from here.

Meanwhile, people working Wachovia's call center in University City are wondering if they will be the next casualty of the buyout.

University City Partners met Thursday to talk about the future of the University Research Park. The conversation quickly turned to the 10,000 employees at the call center on W.T. Harris Boulevard.

A Wachovia representative said no decisions have been made about the future of the call center yet.
