Statesville Man Dies In Police Custody After Taser Incident

STATESVILLE, NC —

An internal investigation is underway after a man shocked by a taser while in police custody died.

Police arrested Anthony Davidson Saturday afternoon for allegedly stealing blank gift cards from Food Lion.

Davidson went in front of a magistrate at the Iredell County jail, but never made it to the booking area.

Police told his family he was hit by a taser, and fell. But family members said that doesn't explain why he suffered internal bleeding and had to be put on life support.

"There's a couple hours there that nobody has any idea what happened to my cousin and that's wrong," Davidson's cousin, Jerry Moore Jr, said.

Jail officials referred Eyewitness News to the Statesville police. A police lieutenant said they too have questions, and that an investigation is under way.

According to Statesville police, other groups are also investigating. The SBI has yet to confirm if they are investigating the incident.
