CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Homicide investigators say Randall Adams Jr., who turns 18 next week, shot 18-year-old Antonio Londale Raye on Senior Drive, just one block from West Charlotte High School. Police believe the two were arguing, which escalated into a fist fight before shots were fired around 3:45 p.m.
Raye was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he died just after 5 p.m.
Staff at the recreation center said they were surprised Raye was shot. They said he often hung out there and got along with everyone.
Friends set up a makeshift memorial of flowers and candles at the site of the deadly shooting.
"Everybody liked him; everybody loved him because he was the type of person that would come by and make everybody laugh," said Demetria Funderburk, who grew up with Raye. "He was a really nice person. He got along with everybody."
Adams was taken into custody late Wednesday evening.
Police said Raye's death marked the 45th homicide in Charlotte this year. There had been 61 slayings in Charlotte on Sept. 6, 2005.
