CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A Charlotte father accused of killing his 23-month-old son on Tuesday made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
Andre Hampton is charged with murder in the death Elijah Burger. Family members said they’re in shock.
"I'm very hurt," said Corine Hampton, the suspect's grandmother and victim's great-grandmother. "I'm mourning for both, and I have deep sympathy for the mother of this child that carried him for nine months.”
Detectives said Andre Hampton beat his son to death inside a south Charlotte motel room late Tuesday. He was arrested the next day.
Corine Hampton said she doesn’t believe the accusations.
“It was an accident. But to know my grandson, he's never been violent, never," she said.
Court records say the opposite, however. In April, Elijah's mother, Lashinna Burger, filed for a restraining order against her child's father. She claimed Andre Hampton, "pushed her down, threatened her and dislocated her shoulder."
Burger later dropped the charges.
"He would never hurt his child," Corine Hampton said again while looking at photos of her family.
Andre Hampton will have a bail hearing Nov. 24.
