CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
VIDEO: Elderly Homeowner Shoots Robbery Suspects, 1 Dead
Police said Joseph Graves, 17, Matthew Morgan, 17, Marcus Fluker, 15, and Tahjaue Wiley, 18, broke into a couple’s home on Grier Road, Saturday afternoon.
Police said at least one of the teens was armed as they robbed the elderly couple inside, ransacked the house and then took off running.
Police said the homeowner, C.L. McClure, drove a third of a mile away and opened fire hitting Marcus Fluker from behind. Fluker was found on Ginger Lane. He later died at the hospital.
Wiley's mother, Telisa Jordan told Eyewitness News she does not defend what her son did. She wants to apologize to the elderly couple, but said the ending didn’t have to be deadly.
“When you follow somebody like that, and then you’re randomly shooting, it could’ve been anybody,” Jordan said.
Wiley's mother said Tahjaue was good friends with Fluker, and both were good boys but likely got into the wrong crowd. Wiley said she didn’t know the other two boys.
Neighbors said the homeowner has gotten several threats. Police have increased patrols in the area since the home invasion.
The homeowner's son and grandson said his property has been stolen several times before and he felt, this time, they might take his life as well.
Larry McClure said his grandfather was just trying to defend himself, his wife and his property when he went after the four teenagers who had just robbed him.
"He didn't want to see nobody die, but he feared for his life," McClure said.
Friends of the teens are still in shock over the violence.
“Yesterday, it didn’t even seem like he was gone,” said Jessica McIntyre. “It’s now just hitting me that he’s really gone."
