Two Teens Arrested In Post-Game Brawl At East Mecklenburg High

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Wednesday night, we learned two teenagers were arrested in connection with a violent fight after the East Meck-Myers Park high school football game last Friday night.

Police arrested 17-year-old Darnell Ashford and 16-year-old Kyle Royster. They're both former students at East Meck, but are no longer in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.

We also learned that fight was gang related. The gang unit is still trying to figure if there are more suspects.

Eyewitness News learned Charlotte-Mecklenburg police's gang unit regularly goes to high school football games.

Gang unit officer Steve Parker tells us they point out known gang members to officers working the games. He says watching the gang members with their friends in a social setting lets the gang unit see who gang members are hanging out with. Officer Parker says many gang members know who the gang officers are. He feels their presence acts as a deterrent.

The gang unit was not at last Friday's game between East Meck and Myers Park high schools.
