UNC Charlotte Professor Left For Dead Awakens From Coma

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Police said a University of North Carolina-Charlotte professor who was beaten, robbed and left for dead is now out of a coma.

Officers also believe they are closer to finding the people responsible for the crime.

Narayan Dhakal was found lying in the middle of Eighth Street back in October. He had been in a coma ever since.

Police said Dhakal is awake but unable to talk about the incident yet. However, police said they have an idea of who is responsible for the brutal attack.

“They’re 15 to 18 years old, black males,” said Sgt. Mike Harris of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. “One goes by the nickname ‘Spade,’ the second goes by the nickname ‘Tyrique’ and the third goes by the nickname ‘Respect.’ ”

Officers believe the three hang out near the Transit Center in Uptown and also near the Bobcats Arena.

Anyone with information about the suspects can call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could receive a reward.
