Vets Test Dogs, Cats Seized In Cleveland County

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. —

A veterinarian in Cleveland County is expected to release the results of tests Thursday that were conducted on the more than 80 dogs and cats seized from a home.

Animal Control officers seized the animals Wednesday from a home on McBrayer Street Extension in Shelby.

They said the 85 dogs and cats were kept in the home and in sheds on the property.

The officers first went to the home on Tuesday after receiving complaints about barking and smells coming from the property. Officers said that is when they found the "deplorable" condtions.

Carolyn Grayson Owens, 61, the owner of the animals, is charged with animal cruelty. Owens was released on bond Wednesday evening.

Authorities said Owens was living in a van on the property while her husband lived in the home.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News the conditions kept them up at night.

"The dogs were barking so loud... my kids were trying to sleep," said Angela Seal.

Another neighbor said you could smell the filth outside of the house.

"At night when it's really hot, you have to hold your nose and your mouth just to walk past the road. It will make you sick to your stomach," said Geneva Gimson.

The dogs were taken to the Cleveland County Animal Shelter. Officials said while most of the animals appear to be in good shape, those with illnesses and diseases will have to be euthanized.

The Department of Social Services is looking into the conditions at the home.
