Challenger says US Rep. Pittenger's race headed for recount

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A challenger is seeking a recount in his congressional primary race against U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger of North Carolina.

Charlotte First Baptist Church pastor Mark Harris said in an email that he's writing a letter formally asking for a recount.

Tallies completed by local election officials Tuesday show that Pittenger edged Harris by 135 votes, or less than 1 percent of ballots cast. That margin has shrunken slightly since election night. State law allows Harris to demand a recount.

The state's other congressional primary with a similar margin was the 13th District Democratic race. Tuesday's count shows Bruce Davis maintaining a lead on Bob Isner by about 100 votes. Isner said previously he did not plan to seek a recount unless the tally changed dramatically.
