North Carolina man sentenced to 9 years in prison in child sex sting

BALTIMORE — BALTIMORE (AP) - Authorities say a North Carolina man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison after attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with an undercover FBI agent posing as a 15-year-old girl.

Thirty-one-year-old Travis Wilmoth of Fayetteville was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Authorities began investigating Wilmoth after the mother of a 15-year-old girl reported that he had been chatting online with her daughter and that the conversations had become sexual in February.

FBI agents took control of the girl's account and communicated with Wilmoth, posing as the girl. He was arrested after sending sexually explicit images of himself and driving to Baltimore County, Maryland, with the intent of having sex with the girl.
