Man rescued from Durham County sinkhole created by hurricane

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County emergency workers have rescued a man who fell into a sinkhole that was created by Hurricane Matthew.

Redwood Volunteer Fire officials tell local news organizations that the incident happened Sunday morning on a road near Falls Lake.

The man was stuck in mud and cried for help. A nearby fisherman heard the man's calls for help and contacted authorities.

When rescue crews arrived, they pulled out the unidentified man and transported him to the hospital.

It's unclear how the man fell in. The road where the incident occurred was closed in October after the sinkhole appeared following Hurricane Matthew. Multiple cones and fences had been set up to keep people back.
