'North Carolina's favorite son' Rev. Billy Graham turns 97

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina's favorite son, Reverend Billy Graham, is celebrating his 97th birthday Saturday.

The Billy Graham Library in southwest Charlotte spent the week honoring him and the big day. All week, people have been able to leave a birthday message for Graham on a special banner.

Channel 9 spoke to one visitor, Ann Roberson, after she signed the banner Friday, and she said she started following Graham after seeing one of his crusades.

“I want to thank him for faithfully serving the Lord all of these years,” she said. “And I just know he's served well.”

The special banner will be on display through Saturday and the library will also have a special birthday cake for guests.

The Billy Graham exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History opened up to the public in Raleigh Friday. The exhibit, "North Carolina's favorite son: Billy Graham and his remarkable journey of faith" chronicles his life.

The exhibit includes personal memorabilia and provides glimpses into his family, his leadership and his influence in the Cold War.
