Police: Suspect in Maggie Daniels' homicide arrested

NEWTON, N.C. — The man charged in the death of a teacher in Newton will appear in court Monday.

Sharman Odom is now charged in the death of 31-year-old Maggie Daniels.

Daniels was found dead in her home at the Windsor Apartment Complex off north Main Street in late June.

Police arrested Odom in Winston-Salem on Saturday afternoon. He was questioned by Newton police detectives and then charged with murder.

Channel 9 was there as Odom was led out of the Newton Police Department in handcuffs and taken to jail Saturday.

Odom wouldn't respond to any questions yet had a large smirk on his face when asked about Daniels and her death.

"It's absolutely shocking," said one neighbor at the Windsor Apartments.

Channel 9 learned Odom also lived at the apartment complex.

Police still aren't saying how Daniels was killed.

Detectives searched Odom's home and said physical evidence and interviews led them to him.

Channel 9 found Odom has been arrested for violent crimes in the past.

According to court documents, Odom was arrested in Mecklenburg County for 2nd degree rape and assault by strangulation. Police said those charges were dismissed.

On Saturday, Channel 9 talked with a man whose mother lives next door to Odom. He said he had no idea the accused killer was so close.

"I talked to him a little bit," said Ryan Cline. "He was really quiet and observant."

Some neighbors said they feel a little safer now that an arrest has been made in the case. The community has been on edge since Daniels body was discovered more than a month ago.

"She seemed really friendly," said a neighbor. "She was always smiling."

Channel 9 will continue to follow developments in this case and provide updates on air and online.
