South Carolina teacher killed while cycling

INMAN, S.C. — A Spartanburg County teacher has died after he was struck by a car while riding a bike.

S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Hovis tells local media outlets that the crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday near Inman when a woman driving a 2002 Buick struck a cyclist from behind. The cyclist, 53-year-old Jeffrey Gordon Pierce, was thrown from his bicycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Pierce was wearing a helmet.

Hovis says the driver of the vehicle was uninjured. The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed.

District One Schools spokeswoman Sandra Williams says Pierce was a teacher at Inman Intermediate School.
