SC Senate unveiling portrait of slain Sen. Clementa Pinckney

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Senate is unveiling its official portrait of slain Sen. Clementa Pinckney.

Sen. Gerald Malloy said the ceremony will be in Senate chambers at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A Senate committee picked artist Larry Lebby to paint Pinckney's picture. His other portraits in the Statehouse include paintings of South Carolina civil rights heroes Benjamin E. Mays and Modjeska Simkins.

Pinckney served in the Legislature for nearly 20 years.

He was also pastor of Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston. He was killed June 17 when police say a man fueled by racial hatred came into the church, sat through Pinckney's Bible study, and then shot him and eight other black church members.

Senators voted unanimously to honor Pinckney with a portrait in the Senate chamber.
