GLENDALE, A.Z. —

A Charlotte native helped lead the Florida Gators to the BCS Championship Monday night. The Gators stand alone -- national champions in both football and basketball. They are the first Division One school to hold that distinction.

The Gators stunned previously undefeated Ohio State 41-to-14 in the BCS Championship. They held the Buckeyes' high-octane offense to just 74 total yards. It's the Gators' second national title in football after winning it in 1996 as well.

The Gators shook off an electrifying 93-y ard kickoff return from Ohio State's Ted Ginn Junior on the opening play and scored on six of their first seven possessions. They built a stunning 34-to-14 halftime lead and coasted from there.

Gators Quarterback and Charlotte native Chris Leak was named MVP. He completed his first nine passes and finished 25-of-36 for 213 yards. Backup QB Tim Tebow also threw for one T-D and ran for another.

The Gators' defense caused Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith to have his worst game of the season. Smith completed just four of 14 passes for 36 yards and one interception.
