Edwards Comments On Mayfield Test Results

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

One day after ESPN The Magazine revealed that the third drug to show up in suspended NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield's drug test was methamphetamine, the racing world is reacting.

Eyewitness News anchor Blair Miller spent Wednesday gathering comments from around racing.

Driver Carl Edwards said that he is trying to reserve judgment on Mayfield's case for now, but said he thinks NASCAR is doing the right thing with its drug policy. "Nobody would say it's alright to race on the race track with someone who's impaired, and I think that NASCAR is trying to do their best and I feel good about it," he said.

Miller also spoke with Bill Diehl, Mayfield's attorney, who couldn't comment directly on the details of the case because of a gag order. However, he did say, "NASCAR is butchering a nice young man who doesn't do drugs and hasn't done drugs. They're abusing their power."

NASCAR has suspended Mayfield indefinitely, but Diehl has filed paperwork trying to get a judge to overturn the suspension.
