Butler Football Player Resigns From Team After Fatal Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A Butler High School student who faces charges in a crash that killed 51-year-old Nathan Hartis withdrew from the football team on Tuesday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials.

Deion Walker, 17, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, driving without a license and failure to yield the right of way. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, Walker was never issued a license.

Police said Walker, a senior at Butler and a former running back on the team, turned across Rocky River Church Road to go left onto Camp Stewart Road on Saturday and hit Hartis, who was riding a motorcycle.

Hartis died at the scene, police said. Walker, who was also cited for driving without a license in September, was not hurt in the crash.

Hartis's wife of 28 years, his daughter and his son-in-law said Hartis loved riding his motorcycle and did so whenever he had the chance.

Walker is due in court in December.
