Coroner: HS Football Player's Sudden Death Was Result Of Heart Condition

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. —

A high school football player who died suddenly earlier this month suffered hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the Chester County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a thickening of the heart muscle, which can often lead to death, the coroner said.

Brian Colvin, 18, was a senior and varsity running back at Lewisville High School. He collapsed on the field at Chester High School during the county's annual football jamboree on Aug. 13.

Colvin’s mother said she didn’t know of any health problems the teenager had.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a leading cause of sudden death in teenage athletes, the Chester County coroner said.
