The latest NASCAR Hall of Fame attendance numbers are still under what officials’ target numbers were.

Between May and December 2010, almost 198,000 people toured the Hall of Fame.

Organizers had originally envisioned welcoming 800,000 fans a year.

“All of us had an idea of what would happen in terms of the reality of the economy we dealt with, and the reality that NASCAR has been through a rough patch itself," said Tim Newman with the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.

The attendance bar has been lowered, with expectations set at 250,000 fans a year.

The Hall is operating at a fiscal deficit of $836,744.

Hall of Fame officials hope the upcoming CIAA and NCAA tournaments boost 2011 numbers, and that the Democratic National Convention will help in 2012.
