Strong thunderstorms expected Friday afternoon across area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The intense heat and humidity is causing the heat index to rise Friday across the viewing area.

Strong and severe thunderstorms will move across the area Friday afternoon, Severe Weather Center 9 meteorologist Katie Virtue said.

The threat will increase for the Charlotte metro area after 4 p.m. and continue through 8 p.m.

Any storms that form could bring strong wind gusts, along with lightning, heavy downpours and some hail.

The intense heat will calm slightly this weekend.  Highs Saturday are expected at 96 degrees and 94 degrees on Sunday.
