Jim Carroll, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, told The Associated Press that 22 tractor-trailers and 37 cars were involved in the accident in Jefferson County. He did not immediately say how many people were injured or share details on the severity of their injuries.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. in Falls Creek, WJAC reported.

The crash happened as winter weather swept over the region. Transportation officials reduced the speed limit on I-80 to 45 mph in Mercer, Venango, Clarion and Jefferson counties Thursday morning, citing a severe winter storm.

Officials urged motorists to stay off the roads, if possible.
