PITTSBURGH — A 2-month-old’s parents are facing charges after the baby was revived by Narcan and tested positive for methadone.
According to the criminal complaint, the baby was brought to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh on Oct. 11 after the child’s parents, Lorie Adkins and Erik Eakin, found the 2-month-old unresponsive. The complaint stated the child was in respiratory arrest and his condition improved after he received a dose of Narcan, an opioid antidote.
A urine drug test was conducted and the baby tested positive for methadone, the complaint stated.
The complaint said Adkins told hospital staff that she takes methadone daily and stated her baby must have overdosed from breastfeeding.
The medical report, however, stated it’s unlikely the amount needed to give the baby symptoms would be passed onto the child in that manner.
A caseworker for the Office of Children, Youth and Families told detectives he followed up with The Children's Home staff who advised that the infant was not breastfed, the complaint said. Staff at The Children's Home said that while the baby was weaning off methadone, Adkins attempted to pump, but wasn't producing enough milk and had to supplement with formula.
Warrants have been issued for Adkins and Eakin. Both are charged with endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.
