Groom steps in when bride with broken pelvis can't walk down aisle

Ontario, Canada — A bride was heartbroken that she would have to be wheeled down the aisle on her wedding day, so her groom decided to carry her instead.

Hannah Patterson told ABC News that just a few weeks before her August 25 wedding in Ontario, Canada, she was in a bad car crash.

"I broke my pelvis in three places, punctured my kidney, broke my ribs, (got a) concussion, (and had a) loss of partial hearing," Patterson, 23, said. She had to use a wheelchair to get around as she recovered from the crash.

"Obviously, being in the wheelchair and not able to walk was very upsetting for me on my wedding day," she said. "But I had cried at the rehearsal so I didn't cry on the day."

The couple's wedding photographer, Sarah Powell, shared a photo of the touching moment to Facebook Oct. 6.

"Although this bride had been in a terrible car accident 5 weeks before the wedding day, this couple’s love was not going to be stopped. After her father wheeled her partway down the aisle, her groom tenderly carried her the rest of the way," the photographer explained in the photo’s caption.

Patterson said she was determined to stand when she delivered her vows despite being in pain. She balanced on one leg and leaned on her groom, Stuart Patterson, to support herself.

"It was hard on me to stand for that long even with Stuart holding me up, but it doesn't seem obvious in the pictures and video the pain I was in," she said.

Patterson is now slowly but surely recovering and says she can now use a cane to get around her house.
