NEW YORK — Discount airline JetBlue found a way to make passengers love, instead of loathe, crying babies on a plane.

Normally, being seated near a crying baby on a cross-country flight is a bad thing, but hundreds of people benefited from it on a recent flight to California.

JetBlue selected the flight from New York to Long Beach for a special promotion.

Every time a baby cried, the passengers received 25 percent off their next flight. If four babies cried, the airline would give them a free ticket.

When the fourth baby cried, passengers cheered and clapped.

The airline said it wanted to do something special for mothers who fly with children in advance of Mother's Day on Sunday.

The airline filmed the promotion in action and ended with a message for passengers: “Next time, smile at a baby for crying out loud.”
