Man robs store, returns later with cash while weeping, police say

MANCHESTER, N.H — A Manchester, New Hampshire, man was arrested Tuesday after police say he robbed a convenience store, but the suspect returned later to return the stolen cash and apologize.

Police said Carlos Reyes, 46, robbed the store just after noon on Tuesday while armed with a sharp stone, according to WMUR.

Police said he threatened the clerk and took about $200 in cash before fleeing.

"About seven hours later, he decided that he was feeling bad about his actions, and he allegedly went back there to apologize, at which time he was placed into custody by a Manchester police officer who arrived on scene," Manchester police Lt. Brian O'Keefe told WMUR.

Officers said Reyes told them that he robbed the store earlier because he was hungry, but wanted to return the money to the clerk.

The Associated Press reported that he began to cry when he told police that he wanted to "turn himself in."

"In 20 years, I haven't seen that," O'Keefe said. "So no, it's not a very frequent occurrence in the Queen City."

Reyes was arrested and charged with robbery after police reviewed surveillance photos. The weapon was found inside the store, police said.
