Maria Butina, Russian foreign agent, sentenced to 18 months in prison

Maria Butina, who was characterized as a Russian gun rights activist, has received her sentence in federal court.

Butina has been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for not registering as a foreign agent, The Washington Post reported.

She had asked for credit for time served and deportation after she agreed to work with prosecutors, according to the Post.

The 30-year-old Russian national pleaded guilty in December to conspiring with an official from Russia to gain access for the Kremlin to the National Rifle Association and other conservative political groups, CNN reported.

She was working with the Russian government from 2015 until she was arrested in July.

In the plea, she admitted to working under the direction of Alexander Torshin on unofficial lines of communications between American political influencers,

But her attorneys said she was doing it with good intentions and wanting to improve the relationship between the U.S. and Russia, according to the Washington Post.

She also gave prosecutors information about her boyfriend, Paul Erickson. Erickson was characterized by CNN an operative for the GOP who is accused in Butina's plot. He has not been charged in a case related to Butina's plea.
