Mother of 3 jailed for 44 days in case of mistaken identity

NASHVILLE — A Tennessee woman and mother of three children ended up spending over a month in jail because she shared the name of a suspect who was part of a drug-trafficking investigation.

Ke'Nieshea Adkins maintained her innocence the entire time but remained in jail because her family was unable to afford to pay her bond, according to WSMV.

The family contacted an attorney, who reviewed the evidence that the Drug Enforcement Agency had submitted, and discovered that it was a case of mistaken identity. Adkins did not resemble the woman identified as the suspect, nor did she use a nickname that authorities said the suspect allegedly used. The license plate of the car that authorities said was involved in the crimes also did not belong to Adkins.

The DEA sent WSMV a statement about the case, saying that it was conducting a comprehensive internal review.

Adkins has been reunited with her children and family. She plans to file a federal lawsuit.
