Mother's Facebook post lands her in court

ROSWELL, N.M. — A mother in Roswell, New Mexico, had to answer to a judge concerning a post she put on Facebook.

Jeanette Garza Alvarez asked if parents of children who went to her son's middle school had heard about rumors of a shootout older students were planning, KRQE reported.

The post said "Anyone else's kids go to Sierra? My son says some 8th graders are planning on bringing guns to school maybe Monday and have a shootout to see who's first to die."

She posted the question, she said, to find out if any other parents had any information.

The school, according to Alvarez and her son, made an announcement at the school about the potential plot.

But the Monday after Alvarez made the post, at least 160 students were absent.

Because of that, police said they gave Alvarez a citation for creating a public nuisance, KRQE reported.

A judge ruled against Alvarez, but did not give her any jail time. She did have to pay $29 in court fees.
