Stampede shuts down historic Beale Street in Memphis

MEMPHIS — Hundreds of people were sent running after an incident early Sunday on Memphis’ famous Beale Street.

Memphis Police say around 1 a.m., a large group of people began running east of Second Street before heading north on B.B. King.

Within a couple of minutes, several hundred other people came running west of Beale Street attempting to exit the street.

Officers were told to not allow any additional pedestrians on the street from any entrance.

After checking the street for injuries police found multiple people suffering from injuries during the stampede.

A female told police she scraped her knee as dozens stormed the street.

Officers on the scene requested an ambulance for a second victim who complained of chest pains, according to the report.

The stampede also caused damage to two patrol cars. One vehicle sustained a broken back window after a beer bottle was thrown in the midst of the incident and another car had scuff marks.

A section of wrought iron fence was also knocked down near the intersection as people tried to exit the street.
