Tropical Storm Bonnie weakens to tropical depression

UPDATE: As of Sunday morning, Tropical Storm Bonnie had weakened to a tropical depression as it pushed toward the Georgia and Carolina coasts.

Tropical Storm Bonnie formed Saturday off the coast of South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm warning was issued at 4:50 p.m. Friday for the entire South Carolina coast from Georgia to North Carolina.

Bonnie has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving northwest at 10 mph. The tropical storm is about 125 miles from Charleston and is expected to make landfall Sunday before weakening and moving north, meteorologists said.

Heavy rains have started falling along the coast of South Carolina. There have not been any evacuations and the beaches were open Saturday, although lifeguards were warning swimmers of rip currents.
