White House Correspondents dinner: What time, channel; a few funny clips from the past

The White House Correspondents dinner, which has become a hot ticket in Washington DC for its mix of media, politics, actors and athletes, takes place Saturday.

President Obama is schedule to be making his last visit to the event as the sitting president, and, if history is any indication, he will bring his A-game when he takes a few swipes at the media and politics, in general.

Here’s a look at the annual dinner and a few clips from previous dinners.

What is it?

According to the White House Correspondents Associate, “the WHCA represents the White House press corps in its dealings with the administration on coverage-related issues. The WHCA  dinner is traditionally attended by the president and the first lady as well as other senior government officials and members of the press corps. Proceeds from the dinner go toward scholarships and awards aimed at supporting aspiring journalists and recognizing excellence in the profession.”

The history

The first dinner was held in 1921 at the Arlington Hotel in Washington with 50 men in attendance. The first time a president attended was in 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge showed up. Since then, every president has attended the dinner at least once.

According to the WHCA, the dinner barred guests of color until the 1950s, and women until 1962.

Who is the entertainment?

Larry Wilmore, host of "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore" on Comedy Central, is the entertainment, the WHCA announced.

What time?

Coverage begins at 6 p.m. (ET). Look for “red carpet” arrivals, and remarks by President Obama and The Nightly Show's Larry Wilmore, according to WHCA. According to C-SPAN, the show begins about 6:30 and will go until  11:15 or so.
