Woman accused of stomping kitten to death in drunken rage, police say

WEYMOUTH, Mass. — A Massachusetts woman is facing an animal cruelty charge after police said she stomped a kitten to death in a drunken rage, according to multiple reports.

Weymouth police arrested Eleanor Campbell, 35, on suspicion of animal cruelty and disturbing the peace after officers went to her home in North Weymouth twice on Friday night, the Weymouth News reported.

Officers first arrived at her home around 9 p.m. after being called by a neighbor concerned over what sounded like a possible domestic disturbance, according to the newspaper.

She told responding officers that she hadn't been fighting with anyone and said she was OK.

"I asked her how much did she have to drink tonight?" an officer wrote in a police report obtained by the paper. "She told me one-and-one-half-beers. I asked how big were they? She told me, does it matter?"

Police told Campbell to go back to her apartment and keep the noise down, the report said.

Officers were back at Campbell's home minutes later after getting reports of a woman throwing things at her neighbor's car. They found clothes draped over a car parked in the apartment's driveway and Campbell, wearing only a T-shirt and socks, the police report said.

The officer arrested Campbell on suspicion of disorderly conduct. After he put her into another officer's police cruiser, he noticed a small kitten lying on the driveway.

The kitten's neck appeared to be broken and it "appeared to have been stomped and flattened by someone," police said in a report.

The socks worn by Campbell "were covered in blood, and with the splatter of blood on Campbell's legs it confirmed that the cat was stomped by Campbell," according to police.

"Campbell had, in fact, a fit of rage from induced alcohol," police said.

Authorities estimated the cat was 3-4 months old and weighed 3 pounds. It was taken to an animal hospital for examination.
