Flood safety

  • Stay aware of flood watches and warnings. Click here to sign up to receive severe weather alerts.
  • If told to evacuate, do so immediately.
  • If you evacuate, don’t leave your pets behind.
  • Don’t drive through floodwater, and don’t drive around barricades. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
  • If your car stalls in floodwater, abandon it and get to higher ground.
  • Don't walk through flowing water and don't let kids play near creeks or streams or in floodwater on streets.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater as it is often contaminated.
  • If you see someone trapped by floodwater, call 911 and if possible, throw them something to use as a floatation device.
  • Know that even after the rain ends, streams may keep rising for several hours.
