April brought much cooler temps than last year

April weather comparison
This April has been a temperature roller coaster.

By Katie Virtue

This April has been a roller coaster, with temperatures ranging from 80 degrees to 60 and back again.

Meteorologist Katie Virtue says temperatures on average have been several degrees cooler than last April.  High temperatures only warmed into the 80s on four days this April, compared with 10 days last year.

Meteorologists attribute this cool-down to a subtle shift in the weather pattern.

Last April, a large area of high pressure to the south pushed very warm air into the Carolinas, keeping temperatures in the 80s.

But so far this April, high pressure to the north has kept a wedge of cool air flowing into the Carolinas, with many days in the 60s.

These changes to the weather pattern typically occur from year to year.
