Weight of snow causes store ceiling to collapse

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The weight of the snow and ice was so heavy it caused the ceiling of an east Charlotte business to collapse.

It could be weeks before the Family Dollar store on W.T. Harris Boulevard is able to reopen again.

A store manager received a call from the complex's security alerting them that their ceiling inside the store had collapsed.

They dialed 911 and the Charlotte Fire Department arrived to assess the scene and seal off the store.

Managers said the inside of the store is a complete mess.

"At first I thought it was just a power panel fell or something but when I came and seen the building I was like, 'Oh, all the front was down. It collapsed,'" said Mike Wilson.

The manager closed the store early Thursday because of the storm, so no one was inside.

Fire officials deemed the building unsafe.
