Canucks Try To Continue Dominance Of Caps
(Sports Network) - It has been nearly eight years since Vancouver last lost to Washington. The Canucks will try to extend their winning streak to six games over the Capitals when the two clubs get together tonight at the Verizon Center. The Canucks haven't dropped a test to Washington since a 4-3 overtime decision on February 14, 2001. Vancouver has won five straight over the club since, including three in a row in Washington, where the Canucks haven't lost since a 3-2 OT setback on November 22, 2000. Vancouver, which plays the second of six straight on the road tonight, enters this test having won its first two games of the season, both against the Calgary Flames. After a 6-0 home win on Thursday, the Canucks posted a 5-4 overtime victory in Calgary on Saturday. Pavol Demitra netted the overtime winner and Roberto Luongo stopped 25-of-29 shots faced. He made 25 saves in the shutout win two days prior. Vancouver wiped out an early 3-1 deficit with second period goals from Ryan Kesler and Rick Rypien. Just a year removed from finishing 1-2 in scoring for Vancouver and combining for 150 points, bothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin are off to a fast start. Daniel scored twice in Saturday's win, with Henrik setting up both goals. Daniel Sedin has two goals and three assists through two games this year, with Henrik adding a goal and three helpers. Defenseman Kevin Bieksa left the win due to a left knee injury in the first period and is questionable for tonight's test. After dropping their season opener on Friday to Atlanta, the Capitals got into the win column with a 4-2 victory on Saturday over Chicago. Brooks Laich scored the game-winning goal with 4:27 to play, Matt Bradley also lit the lamp, and Alexander Ovechkin, last season's goal-scoring leader and reigning MVP, scored twice. Ovechkin was shut out in Friday's loss to the Thrashers. Ovechkin, who scored 65 goals a year ago, has two goals and two assists in two career tests versus the Canucks. Jose Theodore bounced back from a rough season opener and made 19 saves for Washington. Having spent two-plus seasons with Colorado, Theodore is 11-9-2 with a tie and 2.71 goals against average in 24 career games versus the Canucks, all but one of those starts. Luongo, meanwhile, is 15-9-0 with three ties and a 2.14 GAA in 29 games lifetime against the Capitals, 27 of those starts.
