Bryzgalov Shuts Out Avs, As Ducks Crush Colorado To Take Series Lead

Posted: 1:58 am EDT May 6, 2006

(Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne finished with a goal and two assists while Ilja Bryzgalov posted his second consecutive shutout, as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim bested the Colorado Avalanche, 5-0, in the first game of their Western Conference semifinal set at Arrowhead Pond.

Bryzgalov continued to play well in net in place of Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Bryzgalov made 29 saves in the win for sixth-seeded Anaheim, which was just two days removed from its Game 7 win over the Calgary Flames. Bryzgalov made 22 saves in that 3-0 victory.

"That was the only question I was worried about, how we were going to feel after that first series victory," said Selanne. "But I'm very proud of the guys being able to jump right away into a new series and play so well tonight. That's a great sign for this team. but now we need to start pushing for the next one."

Chris Kunitz added a goal and an assist while Joffrey Lupul also scored for the Ducks, who scored four goals in the second frame to set a new club record.

Jose Theodore was rocked for five goals on 34 shots faced for the Avalanche, who shocked second-seeded Dallas in five games to move into the semifinals.

Game 2 is Sunday in Anaheim.

"We didn't have a very good game and we have to bounce back Sunday," said Colorado's Joe Sakic. "We know we have to be a lot better. (Anaheim) played a great game and they deserved it."

Colorado winger Steve Konowalchuk returned to action in the game. Konowalchuk had been out since late November because of a broken wrist and was thought to be out for the rest of the season. He logged just over 14 1/2 minutes of ice time.

Ahead 2-0, the Ducks scored twice in the last minute of the second period to break the game open.

With 55 seconds left in the frame, Selanne took a pass at the blue line from Kunitz, separated himself from two defenders and backhanded a shot over Theodore's glove for a three-goal lead.

Anaheim then went on a power-play with 47 seconds to go in the second after a tripping call on Colorado's Alex Tanguay and Selanne helped setup the fourth goal.

The forward took a pass at the left side of the net from Lupul. Theodore saved Selanne's ensuing shot, but Selanne grabbed the rebound and sent the puck back to Lupul, who put the disc into a wide open net from the crease with five seconds remaining.

After a scoreless first, Samuel Pahlsson made it a 1-0 game 2:38 into the second and Kunitz made it a two-goal edge with his rebound tally at 10:24 of the frame.

Travis Moen capped the scoring in the game with his tally at 11:07 of the third.
