Detroit Red Wings (1-1-0) At Carolina Hurricanes (2-0-0), 7 P.m.

(Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to win their third straight game to start the 2008-09 campaign when they welcome the Detroit Red Wings for tonight's test at the RBC Center.

The Hurricanes began the year with a 6-4 home victory over Florida on Friday and then posted an overtime win Saturday in Tampa Bay. Eric Staal's second goal of the game with 23.6 seconds left in overtime led Carolina to the 4-3 decision over the Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum.

With time winding down in the extra session, a turnover in the Carolina end resulted in Ray Whitney grabbing the puck and skating down the other end on a 2-on-1 break. On the fly, Whitney faked a shot from the top of the right circle and fed the puck to Staal, who shot it into the virtually empty net for the win.

Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and an assist while Matt Cullen also scored for the Hurricanes. Michael Leighton made 26 saves in the win.

This marks the first time Carolina has began the season with two straight victories since 2001-02.

The Red Wings opened the season at home with a setback to Toronto, but rebounded with Saturday's triumph at Ottawa. Johan Franzen netted the game- tying and game-winning goals in the third period and Detroit got past the Senators, 3-2, at Scotiabank Place.

Valtteri Filppula scored the other Detroit goal while Henrik Zetterberg notched two assists for the Red Wings.

Chris Osgood turned away 20-of-22 shots to get the win.

The Red Wings are 8-2 with a tie in their last 11 meetings with the Hurricanes. However, Carolina has taken two of the previous three encounters in Raleigh.
