Choosing A Security System

Arlie Rachwal, Contributing Writer

So you decided to invest in a home security system.

Choosing the right type of alarm system for you and your family is important. You want to find one that is best for you at the best price.

  • Make sure the person is licensed before installing your alarm system.
  • Alarm systems should have an audible siren or speaker to be effective.
  • Alarm systems rely on phone lines, long-range radios or integrated cell phone transmitters. If it's a phone line, have the phone company install the network interface device inside your home and run the wire at a high elevation.
  • Learn how to use your alarm properly so you can avoid false alarms. That way, when it does go off, everyone will know it's serious.
  • Use highly visible alarm decals.
  • Interior protection is safe, but window protection is more secure. This can get expensive with multiple windows.
  • Make sure your response call list is up to date.
  • The most effective alarm systems are passive infra-red sensors that detect when a person enters by detecting a change in air currents. Pets often set off these devices unless the device is specifically designed to be pet immune.
  • Installing several panic buttons around the house can also be effective, although they are usually reserved for retail use.
  • Some high-end alarms allow you to have a different pass code to arm and disarm the system. That way, workers in your home can arm it when they leave, but won't have access to disarm it.
  • Test your system about once a month to make sure it is working properly. Doing this with the alarm company works best.
  • If your system is wireless, make sure it gives a warning when the battery is low.
  • Your security system should offer fire protection as well. Check with your property insurance policy to see if you can get a discount by including fire-warning equipment. However, a heat detector isn't enough; be sure your system comes with several smoke alarms.
  • Safety is top priority for your home and your family. Instead of being afraid of burglars, be the house that they are afraid of.
