Drivers Say Dodge Ram ‘Death Wobble’ Not Safe

Some drivers say their pickup trucks have a defect that's putting them and others on the road in danger.Owners of Dodge Ram trucks call it a “death wobble” when their vehicles shake so much they lose control. “I'm scared to death to wreck it,” said Tracy Cunningham, who owns a Dodge Ram 2500.She said she's afraid to drive it over 40 mph because if she does and hits a bump, the truck shakes so violently it can't be controlled.“I thought I was going to die. It was that bad,” she said. Many drivers have shared similar experiences online. Eyewitness News cameras caught the “death wobble” in action when Cunningham was driving her truck and hit a small pothole at 50 mph.The violent shaking didn't stop until the truck slowed down.Cunningham said she took the 2003 pickup to a dealer three times.“Dodge said there's nothing wrong with it. Everything's fine,” she said. But when Eyewitness News searched for defects listed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, there were 45 complaints involving Dodge Ram 2500 trucks model years 2003 to 2008.A driver from Mooresville wrote the violent shaking happened 12 times, and it once caused his truck to cross traffic and enter the median on a highway.Despite the complaints, there's no formal investigation or recall, but there are concerns. At least one Charlotte mechanic said it’s a safety issue.Duane Hutcheson's Charlotte repair shop has not only tried to repair vehicles with the “death wobble,” but the mechanic has also had it happen while he was behind the wheel.“When you've got a hold of the steering wheel, it's just violent shaking,” he said. “And the front end is going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.”“I believe it's very dangerous. I think it's something you need to get fixed,” Hutcheson said.Chrysler knows about the problem. A service bulletin was sent to all dealers three years ago that recommended replacing front wheel dampers and tie rods.A Dodge spokesman said following those steps solves the problem, but some drivers said the shaking and the danger have continued.Hutcheson said if it happens to you, slow down immediately, which will stop the wobble, and then get your vehicle to a mechanic you trust.A spokesman for Chrysler told Eyewitness News that owners should contact dealerships if they believe their vehicle has the so-called 'death wobble.' Chrysler's bankruptcy is not interrupting service in any way at existing dealerships. Also, you can file a complaint with the National Highway Transportation Safety Board by clicking here.RAW VIDEO:
