Whistleblower 9: Woman Worries About Sewage Sitting Outside Her Home

POSTED: 4:38 pm EDT May 8, 2008
UPDATED: 6:13 pm EDT May 8, 2008

A neighbor in south Charlotte’s Quail Run community called Eyewitness News after sewage backed up into and outside her home. She said the homeowners association of her condominium complex refused to clean it up.

“I'm infuriated because I have children here. There're a lot of children around here,” said Toni Wilson. “I have a dog. This is very dangerous.”

Wilson rents a place at the community off Sharon Lakes Road. She said the sewage started backing up into her home Wednesday.

A plumber came and stopped the sewage from continuing to flow into her place, but it was still spilling outside.

Wilson said she called the homeowners association to clean up the mess, but they wouldn't.

Wilson's landlord told Eyewitness News that according to HOA rules, homeowners are responsible for repairs inside units, but the HOA is responsible for repairs outside.

A representative from the homeowners association said it planned to wait until the sewage line was completely repaired until it cleaned up the sewage outside.

But Wilson said she's concerned because she has three children.

“This is exposing us to all kinds of bacterial diseases, infections, E. coli -- I don't know what else is in there,” she said.

Eyewitness News took Wilson’s concerns to the HOA representative and he said he would send someone to clean up the property. A representative for the company that managed the complex then said it hopes to have the mess cleaned up by the end of Thursday.
