Nextel Cup Scoring System
You might think the scoring system is complex, but in reality it’s quite simple. Drivers receive points for where they finish each race. In addition, they can receive five bonus points for leading at least one lap and most laps led.The winner of each race receives 185 points (includes five bonus points for leading at least one lap). Second place receives 170 points and that total decreases in five point increments thru sixth place.2nd - 170
3rd - 165
4th – 160
5th – 155
6th – 150Sixth thru 11th place decrease in four point increments starting at 150 points, while 12th thru 43rd decrease in increments of three. The driver that finishes in last place receives 34 points. It is possible for the winning driver to earn a maximum of 190 points if he also leads the most laps, which would entail another five point bonus. What’s on tap – What is the race for the chase and how is the Nextel Cup Champion determined?
