Davidson Gives Nearly 400 Students Free Trip To Detroit For NCAA Game

It's a free for all at Davidson College.

Nearly 400 Davidson students will board seven buses at 5 a.m. Friday for an 11-hour drive to Detroit to support the surprising run of the men's basketball team at the NCAA tournament.

“The campus is just really excited. Everyone on the campus is going nuts – it’s awesome,” said student Brett Shore.

Behind sophomore sensation Stephen Curry, Davidson upset Gonzaga and Georgetown last week for the school's first NCAA tournament wins in 39 years.

The school's board of trustees set up a fund this week to pay for any student wishing to see Davidson play Wisconsin in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

“Through their generosity, using their own money, they have offered to pay the bus fair, the ticket and hotel for any of our students who are able to get on a bus to go to Detroit for the game,” said Davidson President Tom Ross.

Students said they’re excited about the offer. Heather Smith is just one of hundreds who hopes to make the trip.

“It will be so exciting to be up there with all the other students cheering them on. It will be great,” she said.

College spokeswoman Stacey Schmeidel said Thursday there are only enough buses to take 400 students and many more want to go -- but school officials can't find more buses. About 1,700 students attend the liberal-arts college near Charlotte.

School officials are still trying to round up more buses. Some students said if they can’t find seats on a bus, they’ll just drive themselves. For those who stay on campus, the school will show the game at the student union.

While the trip to Detroit is free, annual tuition at the exclusive, liberal-arts school is just under $41,000 a year.
