(Sports Network) - Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez each homered as the New York Yankees doubled up Toronto, 4-2, in the opener of a four-game set. Mark Teixeira added a hit and an RBI for the Yankees, who have won eight of their last nine. A.J. Burnett (7-4), facing his former club for the second time in 2009, went seven innings for the win, scattering six hits and two runs, fanning seven with a pair of walks. Mariano Rivera recorded the final three outs to earn his 21st save. Vernon Wells collected two hits including a homer and Alex Rios drove in the other run for the Blue Jays, who have dropped six of eight. Brian Tallet (5-6) lasted six innings in the loss, charged with six hits and three runs -- two earned -- with four walks and three strikeouts.

Final Score: Cleveland 15, Oakland 3

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Shin-Soo Choo went 4-for-5 with two homers, a career-high seven runs batted in and scored four times, as the Cleveland Indians crushed the Oakland Athletics, 15-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Travis Hafner belted a solo shot and walked twice, while Asdrubal Cabrera had a pair of doubles and three RBI for Cleveland, which snapped a five-game slide, but have only three wins in its last 16 games. David Huff (4-3) picked up the win after working six innings. The rookie left-hander allowed eight hits and three runs, struck out four and walked one, and has won four of his last five starts. Nomar Garciaparra had two hits, including a double and an RBI for the Athletics, who have dropped seven of nine. Trevor Cahill (5-7) was pinned with the loss after getting raked for eight runs -- five earned -- on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out two.

Final Score: Seattle 7, Boston 6 (11 innings)

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Rob Johnson went 3-for-5 with three doubles, including a two-run double in the top of the 11th, to lift the Seattle Mariners past the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox, 7-6, in the opener of a three-game set at Fenway Park. Ramon Ramirez (5-3), who took over on the mound for Boston in the top of the 11th, gave up a single to Franklin Gutierrez and walked Ryan Langerhans to put men on first and second. Chris Woodward moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Johnson then stepped to the plate and laced the eventual game-winning hit down the right- field line. Mark Lowe came on for the M's in the bottom half and made things interesting when he gave up a two-out solo homer to George Kottaras -- the first of his career. J.D. Drew then singled to right, but Lowe got Dustin Pedroia to ground into a fielder's choice to pick up his first save of the season. Ronny Cedeno went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run for the Mariners, who have won four of six. Chris Jakubauskas (5-5) tossed a scoreless ninth and 10th to collect the win. Nick Green had a pair of doubles, including a two-run hit in the bottom of the eighth to tie the tilt, for the Red Sox, who have alternated wins and losses in their last six games. Drew added a solo homer for Boston, which started a 10-game homestand on Friday.

Final Score: Texas 3, Tampa Bay 1

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Hank Blalock belted a two-run homer and Tommy Hunter pitched 5 1/3 strong innings to collect his first win in the majors on his 23rd birthday, as the Texas Rangers downed the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Rangers Ballpark. Hunter (1-1) gave up one run on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks to collect his first win in his sixth start in the big leagues. The University of Alabama product is taking the place of Matt Harrison, who was put on the disabled list last week with biceps inflammation, in the Texas rotation. Frank Francisco retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his 13th save. Marlon Byrd had an RBI double for the Rangers, who has won three in a row after a three-game skid. Texas had just five hits in the contest. Scott Kazmir (4-5) allowed three runs -- one earned -- on five hits with six strikeouts in a five-inning start for Tampa Bay, which has lost two straight after a seven-game winning streak. B.J. Upton stroked an RBI single for the Rays, who had just three hits in the game.

Final Score: Detroit 11, Minnesota 9 (16 innings)

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Ryan Raburn's RBI single in the 16th proved to be the game-winner as the Detroit Tigers took an 11-9 win over the Minnesota Twins in a 16-inning contest to open a three-get set at the Metrodome. Placido Polanco went 3-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored and Marcus Thames had a two-run home run in the win for the Tigers, who had dropped four of six coming into the game. Freddy Dolsi (1-0) got the win for throwing three innings and giving up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits. Denard Span went 5-for-8 with two RBI and a run scored while Joe Crede and Delmon Young each hit a solo home run in the loss for the Twins, who had won three of four coming into the game. R.A. Dickey (1-1) was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs on nine hits over three innings of work.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Kansas City 0

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - John Danks was dominant in 7 1/3 shutout innings, as the red-hot Chicago White Sox extended their season-best winning streak to seven games with a 5-0 blanking of the Kansas City Royals. Danks (7-6) has been one of the spark plugs for Chicago, going at least seven innings while allowing three or less runs in five consecutive starts. The southpaw allowed just five hits with five strikeouts and no walks to move above .500 for the first time since the beginning of May, when he was 2-1. A.J. Pierzynski hit a solo homer in a 3-for-4 effort, while Scott Podsednik went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the White Sox, who have won 13 of their last 16 road contests. David DeJesus and Luis Hernandez each had two of the Royals' six hits, as KC dropped its fourth straight game. Zack Greinke (10-4) failed to move out of the first-place tie for most wins in the AL after yielding four runs -- two earned -- on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings.

Final Score: Baltimore 6, LA Angels of Anaheim 4

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, as the Baltimore Orioles hung on to edge the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 6-4, in the second test of a four-game series. Luke Scott stroked a two-run double for the Orioles, who had lost four of five coming into Friday. Nick Markakis went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. David Hernandez (2-2) lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks to collect his second win in his fourth start in the majors. George Sherrill picked up his 18th save of the year. Kendry Morales belted a two-run homer for the Angels, who have dropped three of their last four. Maicer Izturis went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Vladimir Guerrero drove in the other run for Los Angeles, which won, 5-2, in the opener of the series on Thursday. Ervin Santana (1-4) went five frames, allowing six runs -- four earned -- on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks to take the loss for LA. Santana was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game.
