CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Milan Howard hauled in a touchdown reception from quarterback Chris Walton with 27 seconds remaining that lifted Charlotte Catholic to a stunning 19-14 win over Charlotte Christian in the WSOC-TV Game of the Week for Week 1 of the high school football season.
The Cougars then intercepted a Charlotte Christian pass to preserve the victory.
Charlotte Christian led 14-13 at halftime and heading into the fourth quarter.
Catholic (1-0), ranked 7th in the state, avenged a season-opening loss against Christian last season, 20-13.
Christian (0-1) is ranked 11th in the state, according to MaxPreps.
The Cougars finished last season at 13-2 and lost in the station championship game.
The Knights finished last season at 10-2 and lost in the playoffs to Charlotte Latin 28-27.
